Against a smooth background is a conventionalized map inside a hoop, which symbolizes the union of Old Rus lands; against the background of the map is an official seal of Volodymyr the Great showing a trident; above is the semicircular legend КИЇВСЬКА РУСЬ (Kyivan Rus).
